Breckenridge, CO February 2002I was lucky enough to win a three night trip to Breckenridge from United Vacations. The prize included airfare, lodging and two-day lift passes. HistoryThe town of Breckenridge has existed since before Colorado
became a state. It was named for U.S. Vice President John Cabell Breckinridge and originally spelled that way. The town was settled by miners and mining was the main industry until the start of World War II. The town was then pretty quite for the next 20 years. As snow skiing gained in popularity in the United States the people of Breckenridge realized that "white gold" could bring their next big boom. The Breckenridge Ski Resort opened in 1961 on the slopes of Peak 8. Today there are still quite a few buildings that date from the 1800's. The Summit Historical Society provides walking tours both guided and do-it-yourself. Breckenridge Ski Resort is now owned and operated by Vail Resorts. LodgingWe stayed at the Beaver Run Resort & Conference center. The resort is right at the base of the Beaver Run Superchair. Our room was a one bedroom with a small kitchen. The best part about it was that it had a big Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The second best thing was that the windows looked away from the ski hill so we could watch the sun go down over the mountains. The resort is pretty large with rooms in several buildings and a big parking garage. Beaver Run has its own shuttle fleet. You just call down and they send one around to your building. It will take you anywhere in Breckenridge. If you're at a restaurant you just have them call the resort for the return trip. I thought this was a nice feature. There are plenty of hotel, condos and private homes in the Breckenridge area. Several offer a free night of lodging during the early and/or late season. Continued Photos | ||||||||||||||||||||
