DiningWe had lunch at Spencer's at the Beaver Run Resort the day we arrived. My husband had the buffet which was pretty good and I had an excellent buffalo chicken sandwich. One night we got pizza from the on-site pizza shop and deli, G. B. Watsons and washed it down with cold Breckenridge Brewery Avalanche beers. We also ate in town at Michael's Italian Restaurant (326 South Main Street) and the Quandary Grill (505 Main Street Station). The food at Michael's was pretty good but, the parking was a little difficult. It's probably best to walk or take the shuttle here. The menu at the Quandary Grill was a little more adventurous and there was a nice view of Maggie Pond. My husband liked his selection but, my trout with hazelnut sauce wasn't very good. The interesting thing about the Quandary Grill was that they had a selection of wines from Uruguay. They will bring you a small taste if you are unsure about which to choose. ActivitiesIn the winter time the main activities are skiing and riding. I actually expected to see more snowboarders than I did. Breckenridge Mountain is not very large and most of the runs are rated conservatively. There are some double black diamond runs but, the sun cover was pretty thin in places. (Even if there had been enough snow I would not have been going down those runs.) Many of the runs have a long flat run out at the end so; remember to keep up your speed as you near the bottom. I wouldn't send expert skiers here or advise someone to go for a week but, for a couple of days or for a beginner it would be excellent. Nearly all of the runs were well groomed and the snow making coverage was excellent on the intermediate runs. The intermediate runs on Peak 10 were definitely the longest. Besides skiing there are the usual winter time activities; snowmobiling, ice skating, dog sledding and shopping. There is also a Nordic ski center located on Ski Hill Road. Main Street was lined with shops, many of them selling jewelry. Getting ThereBreckenridge is about 100 miles west of the Denver Airport. Continental, Frontier and of course United Airlines all offer direct service from Houston. Most packages include transfers by motorcoach or van. This is probably the best way to go for two or three people. Even if a car is less you need to factor in the road conditions before you decide to drive. I received a discount on a rental so we drove a four wheel drive Isuzu Exterra. If you are going to drive be sure to get a vehicle with at least at six cylinder engine. I didn't think the Exterra was going to make it up the continental divide. The drive from the airport took about 2 hours included a stop at a grocery store in Frisco for supplies. Getting AroundThe main street area of Breckenridge is fairly compact so you can walk just about every place provided you are bundled up sufficiently. If it's too cold or you're just too tired there is also a free resort shuttle system. If you want to go over to Keystone ski area there is also a bus that will take you over there. Photos |
