Lodging

We stayed at the beautiful 4 star Plaza Hotel on Adolphe Max Blvd just south of the Gare de Nord train station. You have to walk past a small red light district but, it was pretty tame.  This hotel caters to the business traveler and has large meeting rooms. The room was a decent size and the bathroom was large and very modern. The bar/lounge of the main lobby is very elegantly decorated.   The only problem we had is that the restaurant is closed on weekends.

Dining

For my first meal I couldn't resist having the mussels that Brussels is famous for. The pot of steaming mussels was much more than I could eat. The other things that Belgium is famous for are chocolate and beer. We had both in great amounts. One night we went on a bar tour sampling different brews and drink. The tour started at the bar in the Hotel Metropole. Its very impressive, all gold leaf and dark wood. I had a traditional aperitif a half and half (half white wine and half champagne.) After visiting a couple of bars, it was time to get some dinner.  We ended up eating pizza at an Italian restaurant off the Grand Place. Seafood fans should not miss a walk down the Rue de Bouchers. In the evening every restaurant puts out impressive seafood displays. The last evening we had dinner at the Hotel Vendome just down the street from the Plaza. It was a small place but the food was very good and the service excellent.

In Bruges we ate at a restaurant on the Markt. I can not remember the name but, I had a salad with a huge amount of salmon for a very reasonable price.  Continued   Photos
