Getting There

We drove from Amboise to Beaune via Bourges and Autun (221 miles).  I had originally planned to get to Beaune around 5 pm but, a late start and a long stop in Bourges delayed us to right after 6 pm.  I made extensive use of the Via Michelin website before we left to help plan our route.  The directions and the maps came in really handy.  We purchased maps as we needed during the trip.  We spent most of the drive on secondary roads and the scenery was quiteSavigny les Beaune nice. In every small town that we passed through the display of flowers in the town square seemed to get more beautiful.  I guess now would be a good time to mention the car.  I reserved an intermediate sized car through DER.  They found the best price with Avis.  I expected to pick up something the size of a Ford Tempo.  We must have gotten an upgrade because we left the lot with a Renault Vel Satis.  It turns out that this is Renault's latest and greatest offering.  There were pictures of it everywhere and more than once my husband saw people looking at covetously.  Why, I don't know because it was an ugly car.  It did have every gadget imaginable though including GPS (directions in French weren't of much use to us though).  It was a comfortable car, nice to ride in, handled well and had a reasonable amount of get up and go.

Getting Around

There are companies that offer tours from Beaune to the vineyards but, to really enjoy your self you need a car. Photos
