Visiting the Islands of Aloha

  • If you're flying into Honolulu and then catching a connecting flight to another island,  go immediately to the gate and check-in.  Often you can get on a flight immediately.
  • If you're picking up a car at the airport.  Have one person wait for the bags and have the other person go and get the car.  By the times the bags have made it to the carousel, the driver should be ready with the car.
  • If you plan on doing any hiking pack plastic grocery bags.  That way you can keep your muddy boots away from everything else.
  • Skip the rental car if you're staying in Honolulu.  You can walk to most places in the Waikiki area and take the bus nearly everyplace else.
  • If you decided to buy a grass beach mat in Hawai'i buy the kind that folds so, you can get it into you bag for the trip home.
  • Bring binoculars for sightseeing and bird watching
  • If you have time to kill at the Honolulu Airport, visit the flight museum.
  • Make reservations for helicopter tours before you leave from home to avoid disappointment.
  • For the plane ride over consider buying or renting the audio version of James Michener's Hawai'i
