Getting ThereGetting to the Riviera Maya is easy. While there is a small airport in Playa del Carmen, most visitors fly into Cancun. Funjet has year round charter flights from Houston to Cancun. Continental also offers daily non-stop flights year round. Delta/AeroMexico also has daily flights but you will have to go through Mexico City at least one direction. The direct flight takes just under two hours. Getting AroundMost package vacations include transfers from the airport to your hotel in either air-conditioned van or motorcoach. Trips to the ruins and archeological parks are usually by motorcoach as well. For short trips into Playa del Carmen the hotel can call you a taxi. You can ask the driver to return for you at a specific time or you can go to the taxi stand on Avenue Juarez. Make sure you have small bills as the driver's often do not have any to make change. Another option is to hire a car for part of the day. For two or more people this can often be less expensive and gives you option of exploring off the beaten path. Finally, you can rent a car, either at the airport or arranged at your hotel. The road from the airport to Playa del Carmen and points south is actually pretty nice. However, as when driving in any foreign country care should be taken, especially at night. |
