Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia - December 2001

Every since I was growing up in Washington state the words Whistler/Blackcomb evoked images of a skier's paradise.  My friends and I would talk of heading up to visit the Great White North in wistful tones on our weekly trips to Mission Ridge.  Wistful, because even if Blackcomb Moutain, Expressway to 7th Heavenany of us could have afforded such a trip our parent's would not have let us go.  Now that I have the freedom and the money to do what I want, I decided to take that long awaited pilgrimage.  It turns out that what I had known as skier's heaven is also now snow boarder's heaven but, that didn't really matter.  Whistler and Blackcomb mountains make up the largest ski area in North America.  At their base is a pedestrian friendly village full of hotels, shops, clubs and restaurants.  The strength of the US dollar makes this an affordable alternative to Vail, Squaw Valley or Heavenly (the only US ski resorts large enough when considering a week long vacation, in my opinion).  Combine this with the genuinely friendly Canadians and you have the prefect ski destination.

Summary

I purchased a package from Mountain Vacations that included air, lodging, lift tickets (including a fresh tracks ticket) and round trip airport transfers for two along with some coupons.  A package is a great way to go for a ski trip.  You could buy all of the items separately but, the package costs less and you get extras like the fresh tracks (explained later) and the coupons (one of which used to get a discount on a snow shoe trip).  Continued  Photos
